Is there any way to get a model year/production year from a honda engine via serial number? I just bought two NOS honda EG650 generators from the local Honda dealer yesterday. They were a steal and couldnt pass them up. The generator dates anywhere from 1984 (intoduced) to 1998 when it was discontinued. It has the 2.5 HP side valve G100 engine (great little engine). The serial numbers from the engine crank case castings are:
Honda Generator Year By Serial Number
They have a ton of info available by getting hold of the right person back there. One time I needed the frame serial number for a gen-set that was missing but needed it to order the right part. With the engine serial number they were able to tell me the exact frame number, its all on their computer look up and only takes a few seconds.
Im not surprized! After posting the thread and really reading it over, it occured to me that the title could be taken two different ways! I was actually expecting a joking responce related to it! All in good fun.Seriously though, its pretty tough to find good information for honda products. Nobody even has a parts breakdown of the honda engines published on the internet. A guy at work brought in his honda HRM217 for me to check out. After seeing that the crank was bent, the blame was immediately placed on his wife. I can't find a thing for it via internet. I'll have to check into the local "honda house" dealer. I guess Im spoiled with lawnboy products. Easy to get part numbers. Practically anything and everything I need is out there for those.I'll try contacting honda in GA for the years. Thanks for the tip.
Update: Honda has recalled 345,000 inverter generators because they pose a burn hazard to consumers. Honda portable generator models EB2200i, EU2200i, EU2200i Companion, and EU2200i Camo can short-circuit around salt water, causing them to smoke and potentially catch fire, according to a notice from the Consumer Product Safety Commission. A number of these same generators were recalled last year for gasoline leaks, as we first reported below on March 22, 2019.
Spartan has been manufacturing lawnmowers since 2014. Each model year and series has distinct features. Whether you own a RZ, RT, SRT or another series, your mower has a unique serial number. Located on the frame, this serial number helps find the parts and accessories for your Spartan model.
Serial numbers include the model number, model year and unit number. Model numbers includes the model series code, deck size, engine CC and engine manufacturer code. Model year is represented by a single letter and unit numbers are located behind the model year. Since Spartan parts are often specific to model numbers and model years, finding this information within your serial number is important.
Spartan Serial Numbers will vary in length depending on model series and production year. The example below is a SRT-XD 61 IN Deck with Briggs & Stratton Vanguard EFI. Complete serial number is SSXD161993VEXLB047307

Over the years Perkins has produced hundreds of different engines and each can have many different variants. So how do you know the exact specification of your engine? All the information you need about your engine is included in the serial number on your engine plate, which you can use to find the parts to fit on your engine.
The engine serial number is on a metal plate attached to the block, typically found on the left-hand side of the engine. The position of the engine plate varies across different engine series. You can find the position of your plate using the table below.
The minimum requirement to produce a result in the engine serial number search tool is the initial build list element, (2 to 4 letters followed by 4 or 5 numbers). Including the full entry of 15 or more digits will deliver the best results.
A vehicle identification number (VIN) (also called a chassis number or frame number) is a unique code, including a serial number, used by the automotive industry to identify individual motor vehicles, towed vehicles, motorcycles, scooters and mopeds, as defined by the International Organization for Standardization in ISO 3779 (content and structure) and ISO 4030 (location and attachment).[1]
On April 30, 2008, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration adopted a final rule amending 49 CFR Part 565, "so that the current 17 character vehicle identification number (VIN) system, which has been in place for almost 30 years, can continue in use for at least another 30 years", in the process making several changes to the VIN requirements applicable to all motor vehicles manufactured for sale in the United States. There are three notable changes to the VIN structure that affect VIN deciphering systems:

The first series was the EU1000i by which Honda revolutionized portable inverter generator. It had goodwill of being silent and after 20 years Honda still continues that goodwill and EU2200i is the most noiseless version of it. If light weight, powerful and quite is the definition of portable generator then EU2200i is the only Inverter generator that defines its kind.
In case you kept the original packing, just check the inbox. You will find a green dot sticker where the barcode is. This indicates that your unit has already been fixed and is, therefore, not affected by the recall. You may also find out the serial number of the generator. From the control panel, turn the machine to the right. You will find the warning labels located at the bottom. On the right, you will find some ventilation slots. Just below these, you will get a sticker with a serial number. In case the number tallies with those of the affected models then it is wise to consult a Honda Service agent to check the machine.
If your generator is registered with American Honda, you will get a notification indicating whether you are affected. You may also contact the recall number (888) 888-3139. Visit the website of the Honda USA and check under the updates and recalls page.

The 10th character in the 17-character VIN represents the vehicle model-year. This standard applies to vehicles built in or after 1981. Note: VINs do not include the letters I (i), O (o), Q (q), U (u) or Z (z), or the number 0, so that they will not be confused with similar looking numbers/letters.
